Absent

June 20, 2008

I feel like I haven’t been online for a few weeks, and it is so nice.  I do miss it, but we have gotten so much done around the yard and house! :-)   My mom is leaving on Sunday.  I will be sad and won’t know what to do next week with her gone!

Watch for some new posts in the next few weeks…

Rhubarb Custard Cake

June 12, 2008

This has always been a favorite cake of mine.  My mom used to make it a lot, and I finally made it for the first time yesterday! (well, we made it together!!)  It is super delicious!  Try it if you haven’t before! :-)

Rhubarb Custard Cake

1 box white or yellow cake mix (prepare as directed on box)

4 cups rhubarb

1 cup sugar

1 pint whipping cream

Mix cake as directed.  Pour into bottom of 9×13 pan.  Dump rhubarb on top of cake mix.  Sprinkle sugar on top of rhubarb.  Pour whipping cream over the top of the rhubarb.  Bake at 350 for 50-60 minutes!  The cake will rise to the top and custard will form on the bottom!!!

Enjoy!!!!!

In a slump!

June 4, 2008

Lately, I have just been in a slump.  No motivation to do anything!!!  My house is showing it for sure!  I really need to get in gear and get organized (not that I really ever have been! LOL)

A while back I created a daily to do list.  I stuck with it for about a week…then vacation time came around.  Once we were done with vacations, I never got back into the swing of it all.  UGH!

So, from now on, back to my daily schedule, meal planning and budgeting will be normal daily things for me.  They HAVE to be or I will drive myself and my family crazy!! :-)

The end!

Mai-ee Milk

June 3, 2008

To translate, that would be “mommy milk”.

Breastfeeding. What words would I use to describe breastfeeding. Amazing, frustrating, free, bonding, tiring, relaxing, hard, easy. There are more I am sure, but those are the ones that come to mind first!! :-) Alex and I have had an amazing run with breastfeeding for the almost 2 years he has been alive. (Less than 2 weeks until his birthday!)

I remember our start. When he was three days old, I was ready to give up. It was such a hard thing to learn, for both of us. But after another few days it got better…then better….then it became old hat!! :-) Now, as we are nearing the end of our nursing relationship, I am saddened. It has been such a big part of both our lives since day 1!!

People are opinionated, I know that. I have my share of opinions…and I like to express them! :-) But, since becoming a parent, I know just HOW many people have opinions that they like to share. Why is parenting one of those things that people just think they can tell you how to do?? (Did that sentence make sense?) Ya know, people feel that they have a say in how you parent your child. Well, they don’t. Ultimately, us as parents get to choose. Whether or not people think it is right or “wrong”!

Now, I will be honest and admit that before Alex was born, I thought I would NEVER, EVER, EVER….repeat, NEVER breastfeed past 6 months, let alone a year!!! That was just wrong!! Where did I form that opinion? Apparantly, it wasn’t a very educated one, it was just what I had heard all my life. Now that I am nursing an almost 2 year old, I can tell you that my opinion has changed!! :-) Do I have a set age that I think is wrong? Absolutely NOT!! As, now I know how hard it is to give up that relationship, esp as they grow older!!!

I have had so many people talk to me about extended breastfeeding, and give me their negative opinions. They frustrate me, but I just move on…and actually they kinda fuel me to keep on going. But, oh, how I do appreciate those comments saying how great they think it is, etc!! :-) Of course, those are few and far between, but nevertheless, very much appreciated!! :)

As we “possibly” draw near to the end, a lot of thoughts are going through my head. I just had to get them all out there. To encourage moms who may want to give up because others tell them it is wrong, and maybe to encourage those that don’t think it is right to maybe change their attitude towards it!! :-)

Alex has been down to nursing once a day for about a month now. In the last week or so, it has been every other day…even up to every 2 days. Usually it is when he gets up. It depends on his demeanor when he wakes though. If he gets up talking and happy, usually he doesn’t ask for it. But, there are mornings when he gets up and is crying a little bit, then he usually wants his Mai-ee Milk. :-) I am at the point where I am doing the “don’t offer…don’t refuse” thing!

To end, I just want to say how blessed I feel to have been able to nurse for 2 years. It is such a hard thing for some women to do, and is very emotional when they are not able to breastfeed. Whatever way you choose to feed your child is right for your family! Don’t ever let anyone sway your decision, and never EVER feel like less of a mother for choosing one way over another! :-) You know what is best for your children!! Also know that no matter what route you choose to go in parenting, there will also be people that disagree with you!!

May God richly bless you today!
